“Investments in new treatment technologies and green solutions are expected to more than double in the next one to three years, indicating a growing focus on long-term sustainability.” That’s what the American Water Works Association (AWWA.org) said in its State of the Water Industry 2025 report, released in June.

Infrastructure renewal and replacement ranked as the #2 issue facing the water sector in 2025, according to the AWWA’s fall 2024 survey of its members.

Capital improvements may be easier to vote for than to finance, however. “Utilities of all sizes are struggling to secure funding for essential upgrades and new treatment technologies,” the AWWA said in its report. In fact, the #1 issue facing the water sector was financing for capital improvements, according to the 2024 survey.
